Volunteer initiative for Life Long Learning in the Open Source area
Thursday, 15 July 2010 12:49

Joomla! is an awarded Open Source content management system which allows you to create web sites and pwerful web applications. Joomla! is currently used in millions of web sites all over the world, offering the perfect balance between a low price and ultimate flexibility. Notable examples are the new website of the Greek Ministry of Education, Life Long Learning and Religions, as well as other web sites of the European Union. On July 1st 2010 the Joomla! Community Magazine was officially launched. It is a unique initiative of 28 volunteers from around the globe for producing a monthly electronic publication foxusing not only on news around the Open Source Joomla! content management system, but – mainly – on quality articles which disseminate the knowledge of the more experienced community members to anyone interested. Important aids in this effort are two Greek companies, Komrade and AkeebaBackup.com, contributing open source software for vital features of the web site, as well as labour and expertise for its realization.

Its worth noting that both companies were awarded for their open source software, developed for over four years, in the international J and Beyond conference, which took place in Wiesbaden, Germany in early June 2010 (video of the awards ceremony). These awards have a special meaning, as the selection of the nominees in each category, as well as the selection of the finalists came through an open process with the participation of the entire global Joomla! user and developer community. We'd also like to note that the AkeebaBackup.com company took its first steps when one of the co-webmasters of the AAE website – Nicholas K. Dionysopoulos – developed backup software for our website and decided to freely distribute it as Free and Open Source Software.
